Description
“Labours of Love: Midwives of Newfoundland and Labrador,” tells a story of many women, the nurses, and midwives, as remembered by those who knew them well. The vignettes of each show us who they were, how they lived, the work they did and just how essential they were in their community. A few had rudimentary training and the support of neighboring (but distant) doctors and nurses, but most enjoyed neither. Untutored in the knowledge and skills of formal nursing and medicine (such as they may have been in those days), they were well schooled in their ways of life. Caring, tireless, ever resourceful and always willing, they did what had to be done. They did amazingly well. These women were remarkable in every way- noble and humble, faithful and caring, the very best of our humanity if you will.
